Session and Elders

Elders are members of the congregation who are ordained to pastoral positions. They help guide the church and serve on its committees. They also visit every family in the congregation four times a year, to share information about upcoming events and to be aware of the needs of the members of the church.

The group of elders is called the Session. When a church member wishes to join the Session, they should pray about it and try to discern God’s call. For those called to become elders, elections occur every two years, with new elders agreeing to serve for six years. After that time, they may choose to retire from active duty, or stand for re-election. Elders could serve for life if they wish and if the congregation continues to elect them.

One particular elder is selected to be the Clerk of Session. This elder acts as the Session’s secretary and co-ordinator. The Clerk takes minutes at Session meetings and helps the minister to arrange the agenda. They also chair the steering committee, which coordinates times and events in the congregation. The current Clerk of Session is Brian Banks.
